| Bergamot essential oil is from the peel of the Bergamot orange. Bergamot is a powerful antiseptic, has a natural deodorizing effect and is therapeutic to depression and anxiety. Light orangey, citrus aroma it is familiar to many as the flavoring in Earl Grey Tea. | |

| Origin: | Originally Asia. Today also cultivated in the Ivory Coast and Reggio di Calabria in southern Italy. Italian Bergamot is preferred. |
| Description: | Trees grow up to 16 1/2 feet tall. Flowers are white, star-shaped, and fragrant. Branches are often thorny. Bergamot fruit is pale yellow in color and is round to pear shaped being about 2 3/4" to 4" long. The fruit is inedible. |
| Fragrance: | Subtle orangey, citrus scent. Somewhat spicy. |

| Extraction Method: | Cold pressing of the fruit's skin. |
| Yield: | Approximately 500 fruit peels to produce one pound of oil. |
| Naturally Occurring Compounds: | Linaly acetate (up to 50%); terpine (up to 40%); bergaptene; linaloole; bergamotine (furocumarin); dihydrocuminalcohol; nerol d-limonen; bergapptole; limettine, among others. |

| Cautions: Because bergamot EO contains bergaptene and bergamotine, it needs to be used with care when applied to the skin. These two chemicals can produce over pigmentation of the skin when exposed to the sun or even just light. Do not apply bergamot oil to skin in greater than .5 to 1% diluted form in a base oil. |
