PATCHOULI

Patchouli is used in Asia as an insect repellent by incorporating it into clothing fabrics and rugs.  The herb has always played a major role in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine where it it used as a stimulant, stomachic and for its antiseptic properties.

Botanical Name: Pogostemon cablin
Family: Lamiaceae -- (mint family)
Origin: Native to Tropical South East Asia, Indonesia and the Philippines.  Today also India, South America and China.
Description: A small (3 ft) bushy herb with large oval fragrant leaves and whitish spike like flowers.
Fragrance: Sweet rich earthy, woodsy odor.  Penetrating and cedar-like.
Perfume Note: Base.
Extraction Method: Steam distillation of the dried leaves.
Yield: NA
Naturally Occurring Compounds: Patchoulol (25% - 40%), pogostol, bulnesol, nor patchoulenol, bulnese, patchoulene, among others.
