"Cleanse the Mind and Free the Soul!"

How appropriate that we address "Cleansing the Mind" around the time of Spring cleaning!

Whether you are a packrat, clutter bug or "neat as a pin type", getting rid of clutter around you, helps not only your environment look better but it helps you mentally as well. Your state of being is the result of everything around you, as well as how you handle daily life. Make our after shower rubs, skin softeners and foot soaks part of your weekly routine. These unisex products help to make pampering go a long way.

What a sense of accomplishment you feel when you have tackled something that you have been putting off for a long time. Your mind is better at ease, and your spirits get a lift.

Start by looking around your home (and don't get overwhelmed) and make a list of things you want to get rid of, go through, change, etc. Take at least one hour when it is convenient to start your task. Pace yourself and don't pressure yourself into getting it done now. Take time out to enjoy the benefits of our Autumn Retreat massage oil or take a relaxing soak with our many bath products such as our bath melts, bath oils or tub sachets.

Little by little, your tasks will be completed and you can put a large black line through it. There, it is done!

Remember, that a good balance of work and relaxation is important. When you take time to take it easy, you feel less stressed and overwhelmed. Try to incorporate aromatherapy into your schedule to relax and recharge yourself.

You might try our new eye pillows when taking a short nap or when you do feel stressed. They really are a great way to unwind.

Check out our website monthly as we try to introduce something frequently and watch for our auction donation on New Hampshire Public Television on the evening of May 5, 2001!  Bid it high and help NH Public Television along with giving yourself a treat!

Have a wonderful Spring and remember: take everything one day at a time.

All About Lavender - "Blue Magic"

Lavender is the most widely used essential oil due to it's amazing properties and ability to relax and heal.  The most prized lavender is harvested in the mountains of France due to the ideal soil and weather conditions.  The best harvest is in the months of July and August, when the heat of the day forces the highest concentration of the fragrant oil to develop within the plant.

Harvesting is done by hand as to not harm the delicate plant and to ensure proper growth for the following year.

There are many types of lavender grown for different uses such as for dried floral arrangements and to yield less expensive essential oils.  Well Beings purchases the finest quality lavender and lavender oil grown in the high mountain regions.  As the planting of lavender is done in lower altitudes so does the oil become inferior, and the cost of the derived oil becomes less expensive.

Well Beings utilizes both the lavender essential oil and the dried herb in a variety of our sensory creations.

Lavender's ability to calm and relax; along with its healing properties to treat burns, bee and wasp stings, eczema, boils, blisters, muscular and rheumatic pain and neuritis make it the most widely used herb.  It is also used to help treat headaches as well as sinus headache.

Our eye pillow, with its combination of lavender, chamomile, patchouli and flaxseed can be used to soothe a headache by simply placing on the forehead and breathing in the soft fragrance.  To accelerate the effect, use chilled.  The combination of the gentle weight, cold and fragrance aid to relax and relieve headaches.

Lavender is a mild, balancing, and stimulating treatment for skin.  It is wonderful for all skin types but especially beneficial for dry skin.  Its use in our Bath Oil / After Shower Rub and Skin Softener boosts their ability to soften and heal dry skin.

This wonderful herb has been used since the ancient times in Rome and has stood the test of time.  Our belief is that its use in our products makes them not only multi-beneficial, but results in a pure, all natural product not available in store bought brands.

Dream Pillows

Dream pillows were at one time known as "comfort pillows".  These small pillows were used in sickrooms to ease the nightmares that sometimes come with the smells of medicine and illness.  Relaxing herbs such as catnip, lavender, chamomile, rosemary, and mugwort placed in little pillows were regarded for their value in encouraging sleep for crying babies.

The European craft of making dream pillows can be traced back several centuries to medieval times.  Dream pillows recall a time when people assigned magical powers to herbs.  It was thought that certain herbs protected against evil, foretold the future, or had the ability to conjure up lovers.  Ancient stories make mention of certain herbs that were used to calm bad dreams, bring about good dreams, or quiet the restless sleeper.  But modern reasoning tells us that herbs can not predict events or ward off evil.  There is much evidence however, both historical and modern, that pleasant scents from herbs and flowers can have a positive effect on sleep and dreaming.  Considerable research in the area of aromatherapy reveals that the fragrances of certain herbs and flowers have a calming effect and promote relaxation.

The beneficial effect of dream pillows is based upon the way that scents and fragrances elicit memories in our brain.  Certain smells have the ability to arouse a memory that was long forgotten.  For instance, the smell of roses can conjure up thoughts of a loved one; a whiff of a particular fragrance can in a flash, bring back a memory, of that first date in high school, of a favorite Aunt, or a peaceful spot in the forest long forgotten.  The part or our brains where memory is stored responds to our sense of smell faster than to our other senses.

Do dream pillows work for everyone?  Most people react to pleasant fragrances in pleasant ways.  Those individuals who use excessive amounts of cologne or perfume or otherwise have desensitized noses have the least reaction.  However for most people, dream pillows bring about a pleasant change in sleep and dreaming, add color to black and white dreams, and alleviate restless sleep.  Dream pillows are also beneficial to the traveler if used regularly by imparting a familiar scent to a strange room and bed.  Individuals who claim they don't dream are often the ones who are most impressed when they first use a dream pillow because they realize they have been dreaming but are just not remembering their dreams.  People who say they never dream in color also often report pleasing results using dream blends.  Herbal dream pillows are an enjoyable and pleasant way to promote creative dreaming and more restful sleep.

Dream pillow blends are very different from potpourri; do not expect a dream blend to have the noticeable strong smells of a potpourri blend.  A strongly scented dream blend tends to overpower and become irritating .  Dream blends have subtle scents that are soothing, calming and relaxing.  To use your dream pillow, just place it on or alongside of your sleeping pillow.  Some individuals place their dream pillow within their pillow case.  Dream blend scents may be "revitalized" occasionally by gently kneading the pillow and its contents with your hands.  When not in use, store your dream pillow in it's plastic "zip" bag.

Well Beings currently offers two special versions of dream pillows:  "Celestial Slumber" and "Great North Woods".  Both pillows feature a hand-crafted, "sham" style outer pillow case containing a removable fabric pouch that is filled with an all natural blend of herbs and essential oils.  The outer pillow case may be removed for washing and replacement herbal pouches are available. Our "Celestial Slumber" dream pillow features a unisex sky and star pattern and is filled with an ancient blend of herbs and essential oils no insomniac can resist. Our "Great North Woods" dream pillows feature an "outdoors" style pattern depicting images of the Great North Woods and contains a relaxing blend of herbs and essential oils reminiscent of the forest.  Both of these pillows make an excellent and unusual gift for yourself, and the hard to buy for.

Basic Bath Tips

The best time to bathe is when the stomach is empty.

To help alleviate some of the light-headedness that some experience as a result of bathing in hot water, try adding some bath salts to your water.  Well Beings offers bath salts crafted from All Natural Caribbean Sea Mineral salts and are available as scented and unscented as part of the "Starry Night Collection".  Also available are Dead Sea Bath Salts made with 100% Dead Sea Mineral Salts.  Dead Sea Salt has been heralded for their curative powers for over 2000 years.  Try one of our bath salts and  bring the waters of the Caribbean or Dead Sea to your home!

After bathing, apply moisturizer while the skin is still warm and moist.  Try our Bath Oil and After Shower Rub hand crafted from a blend of All Natural cold-pressed Sweet Almond Oil (softens skin and relieves itchiness), Sesame Oil (UV protectant), Macadamia Nut Oil (helps maintain the natural moisture level of the skin) and Jojoba Oil (anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, hydrating, excellent emollient).  This product is available scented and unscented as part of the "Starry Night Collection".

After a hot soak, always remember to replenish body fluids by drinking water or herbal tea.

We hope you have a wonderful June!

Summer is in full swing and with it comes heat that affects our bodies in a number of ways.  Hot, sore and tired feet need special attention.  We offer a remedy that is sure to put a spring in your step!  Our foot soaks are formulated to SOOTH and SOFTEN while REVITALIZING your aching tootsies!  How relaxing to feel the soaks melt away the tensions of the day.  We offer invigorating Peppermint, soothing Lavender, gentle Garden Rose, snappy Tangerine and unscented "Starry Night".  They are also a great way to soften skin prior to using a callus remover such as our ergonomically designed "PuMouse" pumice stone.  Together they transform rough, callused skin into touchable, softer skin.

The Heat and sun also dry our skin, especially after too much exposure.  Our Bath Oils/After Shower Rubs are a great way to revive the moisture levels in the skin, as well as a maintenance program for keeping it soft and supple.  Because they are used when the skin is wet (the best state for hydration acceptance) the oil has the ability to moisturize 15 layers of skin!  Our Bath Oils/After Shower Rubs are available in a myriad of delightful scents as well as unscented.  They can be used in the tub or shower, which makes them a versatile product as well.

For hands that get dry from housework, gardening or any other activity, our Skin Softeners go to work to smooth and relieve dry, chapped hands.  The water in our softeners enables the Glycerin to penetrate the skin, resulting in a wonderful softening product with NO GREASY FEEL; which most lotions are guilty of.  Another way to pamper your hands is with our Gardeners Friend Soap.  It is a non-drying gentle exfoliating soap that cleans with Loofah and softens & moisturizes with Oatmeal and botanicals.  Our Gardeners Soap is on special this month, so take advantage of the savings!  Buy one for yourself and another for a fellow gardener!

We have some surprises in store for next month, as we are formulating two new and exciting body products!  (One will be the special of the month!)  In the meantime, enjoy whatever it is that makes you happy!

The Many Benefits of Exfoliants

Exfoliants have multiple benefits for both men and women.  They not only remove dead skin cells from the skin's surface, leaving it soft and conditioned, they also increase blood circulation.  The latter actually stimulates lymph production to eliminate toxins in the skin.

If a salt is used as a base for a scrub, it enables this process to draw even more toxins from the pores.  Dead Sea Salts have a powerful cell metabolizer called magnesium.  This fantastic mineral is the reason that thousands flock to the Dead Sea for its therapeutic benefits.

Exfoliants using sea salts or sugars perform a myriad of benefits in the simple task of gently rubbing the surface of the skin prior to a final rinse in the shower.  In addition to the cleansing and exfoliating of the skin, they also serve as a stimulating massage and improve blood circulation affecting the secretion of the body's natural oils, which help maintain more supple skin.  When combined with carrier oils, they moisturize the skin by allowing the oils to penetrate multiple layers of skin.  This is allowed and enhanced because the skin is warm and wet; the best state for skin hydration.  This beneficial practice can be done on a bi-weekly or even a daily basis depending upon your own personal preference.

Currently we offer three types of body scrubs.  The first, is our "Body Renewal" Scrub which uses Dead Sea Salts and Sesame Oil.  It is available in "Spearmint" and "Ginger-ly Touch" fragrances.  The second is called "Sweet Sensation" made with Turbinado sugar.  Turbinado sugar is a raw sugar that is obtained or crystallized from the initial pressing of sugar cane. The sugar crystals are not stripped of any color, are all-natural, and have no additives.   The Turbinado sugar is combined with Sunflower oil and is available in a scent we have dubbed "Sensual Sweetness".  Lastly, we have a scrub made with Pure Maple Sugar gathered in the "Great North Woods" of New Hampshire along with Sunflower oil.  It is called "Maple Madness" and it works its magic with no sticky after-feel.  As with all our scrubs, you're left with skin that is "polished", softened and supple.

Because the skin on your face differs vastly from the rest of your body, we do not recommend using the body scrubs on the face.  It is not so much that they would be harsh as it is that the oils, salts and sugars may get into the eyes.  Instead, we have formulated a gentle and skin softening facial scrub called "Natures Answer". Available in both a loose granulated scrub (used with water to form a paste, and a vial of Jojoba oil for added moisturizing) or a scrub bar that is used directly on the face.

Be aware that a lot of facial scrubs and scrub bars contain pumice.  This is a wonderful exfoliant (especially for hands and feet) but we feel that it is too harsh to use on the delicate skin of the face.  Ours uses Oatmeal, Peppermint Leaves, Chamomile Flower Heads, Rose Petals and Elder Berries to gently yet effectively exfoliate and cleanse without leaving your face taut or dry.

As always, we invite your comments and suggestions.  We diligently make every effort to bring to you a variety of products that are not only beneficial to the body, but to your senses as well.  We never sway in our quest to make all-natural formulations.  We believe that the natural world holds so many wonderful secrets.  It's our goal to uncover those secrets and share them with you!

Chasing Away the Winter Blues

Winter brings shorter days, colder nights and less time spent outdoors.  Many people experience the "winter blues" or "cabin fever".  It takes a conscience effort to shed those moments of melancholy.  There are many things we can do to alleviate such feelings.   Try to get out during the day when the sun is out.  Even 15 minutes can be a mood booster.  Indulging in something for ourselves evokes an uplifting feeling.

Aromatherapy is especially beneficial during these times, as it promotes feelings of well being and allows us to pamper ourselves.  When taking a bath or shower, try to envision all the stresses and negative thoughts of the day simply melting away.  If you feel chilled or achy a nice warm soak is a great way to warm up and relax.

Different essential oils create different feelings.  Our products that use essential oils such as Lavender, Bergamot, Ylang Ylang, and Rose promote relaxation.  Those that contain essential oils such as Ginger, Grapefruit, Peppermint and Tangerine leave an invigorating feeling.  Incorporating Aromatherapy into our daily lives benefits us in many ways.  It not only aids in coping with stress, but affects many aspects of our moods in a positive way.

Remember to take time for yourself.  You work hard, you deserve it!

March 2002 Newsletter

In the past, we have written about the wonderful and natural ingredients in our products. But, it’s important to mention what is not in our sensory creations.

Many products on the market have the following components and they do little or have adverse effects on the skin.

Let’s start with TALC. It is almost in all of the body powders available, yet, it’s a little known fact that talc is comprised of a powdered soapstone or steatite. It has been shown, like asbestos, it can cause lung problems. This is especially a concern in infants. This is pretty amazing, since so many talcum powders are made to use on a baby! Studies have also shown that talc is linked to ovarian cancer. We do not use talc, but prefer to use cornstarch as an all- natural substitute that works wonderfully as a moisture absorber.

Another ingredient found in many lotions and salves is MINERAL OIL. It is a petroleum derived substance which tends to clog pores and can actually dry out skin over time. We would never use such a synthetic ingredient in our preparations.

If you are someone who is against the use of animal fats in your body care products, stay away from EMU OIL! There is enough cold pressed oils from nuts and other natural sources which do a far more superior job of rejuvenating and restoring skin cells without sacrificing an animal in the process. ALL of our products are animal fat free and cruelty free.

Lastly, and probably the most widely used ingredient in a myriad of products is ALCOHOL. Facial products containing alcohol can irritate and dry out the delicate tissues of the face. What would we use? We would utilize Witch Hazel because it’s very mild while also being a first rate toner, astringent and an anti-inflammatory. The leaves and bark of the witch hazel plant is used to extract the tonic.

We hope we have raised your awareness of certain ingredients that are detrimental to your skin. For optimum skin care, you certainly do not want these ingredients in any preparation you use. It’s good reading to see what a product contains; but more importantly, what it does not!

Please e-mail us with any questions concerning our products. We feel confident that you will see the difference between our products and the multitude of cloned, run of the mill types out in the marketplace!

Enjoy the onset of Spring!

SUMMER SAVVY

With summer in full swing, we would like to provide some tips for coping with those annoying pests that come with the season, as well as common sense skin care.

To deal with mosquitoes, black flies and gnats, here are a few tips to remember:

1) Try not to wear cologne as these pests are even more attracted to you, and will seek you out faster!

2) Work out in the garden between the hours of 9:00 am to 11:00 am and 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The early morning and evening (dusk) is when most insects tend to be in larger numbers. Also, wait until the ground is dry if you recently had rain.

3) Use an effective insect repellent that is DEET free, and high in citronella oil. Our all-natural insect deterrent, "Skeeter Beeter" has been field tested in the mountains of New Hampshire, where we contend with all types of hungry insects. It is a synergistic blend of citronella and various essential oils and is available in either our oil based application or a soap.

When hiking in areas known to have chiggers and ticks, follow the hints below for "Happier Trails":

1) Wear light colored clothing and white socks. This enables you to spot ticks easier that get on your clothing. They can be picked off before they have a chance to crawl towards bare skin.

2) Avoid unmarked trails that have high brush and grasses. Ticks and chiggers appear in higher concentrations in these environments.

3) Frequently spot check yourself and wear a hat to prevent ticks and chiggers from getting into hair, where they are difficult to locate and remove.

If your skin gets dry and dehydrated due to over exposure to the sun or to frequent shaving, we have a myriad of products to combat dry, flaky skin.

1) For all over skin softening, we recommend our Bath Oil/After Shower Rub. It works wonders to restore hydration and suppleness to the skin and penetrates multiple layers of Derma (15 in fact!). Frequently shaved legs will never appear dry and flaky.

2) If your face is taut and dry, our all-natural Herbal Facial restores lost water content by hydrating your skin with wonderfully scented herbal droplets of steam. Dry air actually removes water from skin (not unlike squeezing a sponge). Ever wonder why people who live in a higher humidity area have better skin? It is due to the water content in the air.

3) Dry hands, knees, elbows and anywhere excessive dryness is a problem, can benefit from our skin softener. A simple yet effective combination of vegetable glycerin and distilled water base not only hydrates on contact, but actually draws moisture to the area after application! Men will particularly enjoy our "Men's Dry Skin Solution" for the same reasons. It is applied to any area needing help, and is a great way to combat "shaver burn" on the face.

Check out our website for additional product descriptions as well as newly introduced products. At Well Beings, we harness the wonders of nature and bring you the benefits one product at a time!!
